Brains Brewery Takes Ice To New Heights
It might not be the highest pub in Wales, that accolade goes to a pub at Bylchau, Denbighshire. However, Brains - brewers of Wales’ most famous beers - new Mediterranean styled ‘Grape and Olive’ bar, situated on the top floor of Swansea’s Meridian Tower, the tallest building in Wales, is experiencing such success it has called in Hubbard Ice Systems to install a Scotsman 226 supercuber to keep up with the demand for ice.
The Meridian Tower, located alongside Swansea’s Marina, is 29-storeys high and stands at 350 ft (107m) affording stunning views across Swansea Bay to the Mumbles. The Grape and Olive occupies the top three floors of the tower with a 29th floor mezzanine area for relaxed entertaining, an informal dining and bar area on the 28th floor and a function room on the level below.
John Crutcher, Technical Services Manager for Brains explains; “The popularity of the Grape and Olive at Meridian Tower has exceeded our expectation, and we quickly discovered that a larger ice machine than was originally thought would be needed. We consulted with Adrian Rayner of Hubbard Ice Systems, who specialises in the premium hospitality sector, he recommended a high performance Scotsman 226 Supercuber which can produce over 7,200 cubes of ice every day. This allows us to hygienically and efficiently, prepare ice in quantity, coping with our peak demand periods. The solution makes great practical sense, in fact, at 29-storeys up, this is the tallest building using ice in Wales”.
The Scotsman ACM 226 produces individual Gourmet crystal clear supercubes, with up to 150 kg (330.5 lbs) daily production with up to 70 kg (154 lbs) ice storage capacity. It features a stainless steel exterior, with advanced, computerised diagnostics control and a front panel in & out airflow for built-in installation. The condenser air filter has front access and is removable and washable. The ON-OFF Switch is easily accessible and mounted on the front panel alongside a routine maintenance visible alarm light. The external shell has an ergonomically designed ice storage access, with a disappearing door and a movement dampening, door-closing system. The ice-storage area includes a vapour-based microbial control system pouch and the water system is protected by a patented anti-scale system.
AgION antimicrobial agent is embedded in all the moulded plastics parts.
All 6 series machines are available with an optional Powered Waste Discharge (PWD) System for remote water drain (easy-fit installation).
