Ocean Going Liner Saga Pearl II launches the Scotsman Prodigy Ice Maker

MV Saga Pearl II has embarked on her Inaugural Cruise after a six-month overhaul and refit and is the first UK based Cruise Liner to feature Scotsman’s new Prodigy ice making system. On March 16th 2010 the 446-berth cruise liner departed Southampton for the Norwegian Fjords and the Captain’s first cocktail party featured Scotsman ice cubes.
Saga Pearl II has been berthed in Swansea since September 2009, undergoing £20m of work on its engines, cabins and public rooms and refitting its back of house facilities. Saga Holidays is one of the UK’s leading cruise specialists and the specification of the Prodigy C322 for the Saga Pearl II reflects the high standards it offers its customers right the way through to the ice cubes it specifies for premium spirits and cocktails.
The Prodigy C322 is the newest Scotsman Ice Maker and produces up to 165 Kg of medium or small cubes in a 24 hour cycle, however it is highly energy efficient and has a very small footprint with the ice production unit measuring just two feet square, ideal for the close confines of an ocean going liner. The Prodigy C322 features Scotsman’s ‘Smart’ technology and an accelerated harvest system that pushes the ice off the evaporator plate rather than the traditional method of gravity-thaw harvesting. Consequently the C322 uses significantly less energy and water than a traditional ice machine.
Chris Davis, Commercial Director of Hubbard Ice Systems, the UK representatives of Scotsman says; “Saga Holiday’s customers are more demanding than most travellers when it comes to quality and the selection of the C322 Prodigy is confirmation that Scotsman has once again beaten the ice making market delivering a product that is compact, efficient and of very high quality. Because Scotsman machines are so well engineered and designed for compactness and quietness of operation it makes them ideal for use in onboard hospitality. At Scotsman we are aware of how difficult ice making is in tropical temperatures and of the conditions that an ice making machine has to endure on board a liner, so recommending the C322 Prodigy was one of the easiest nautical decisions we’ve had to make”.
The Scotsman Prodigy range is made up of 12 models with production capacities up to 1.65 Tonnes of ice per 24-hour period. All models are high efficiency using up to 28% less energy than traditional ice-makers and feature unique fan-blade designs, quieter compressors and special Scotsman ‘Sound-Shield’ housings making them ideal for locations where space is at a premium.
All models feature ‘Self-monitoring Technology’ with ‘AutoAlert’ external indicator lights showing the machine’s current operating status alerting staff to key operational issues and minimising performance interruptions.
The Scotsman patented ‘WaterSense’ adaptive purge control reduces scale build up by automatically detecting hard water conditions and purging mineral laden water with every freeze cycle for maximum reliability and longer times between cleanings.
