Ice-ssential Equipment for Injury Recovery

02/05/2008

Soft tissue injuries are commonplace amongst sportspeople, both amateur and professional but it's not just Sport Injury Clinics who can provide a successful injury recovery service.

Ice therapy or Cryotherapy is one of the simplest and oldest treatments of soft tissue injuries sustained during sports activities and Hubbard Ice Systems, the sole UK distributor of Scotsman ice machines, understands how the healing properties of ice can be used in Sports Clubs to ensure your star athletes get the best sports injury recovery treatment.

And with up to 30% off list prices during May and June Scotsman ice machines provide an even more cost-effective way to deliver sports injury and recovery treatments in your club.

Soft tissue injuries, such as hamstring tears, sprained ankles, pulled calf muscles, strained shoulder ligaments and corked thigh, cause bleeding into the underlying tissues. Using ice reduces inflammation by decreasing tissue temperature, which in turn reduces muscle spasm and diminishes pain as well as significantly reducing recovery time.

Every Sports Coach and Physiotherapist knows that the process of ‘RICE’, or Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation, forms the first, and perhaps most important stage of injury rehabilitation, providing the early base for the complete recovery of injury.

Ice is by far the most important part of this healing process and should be applied for up to 20 minutes every 2 hours for the first 48 to 72 hours after injury, but ice treatment is not only beneficial in the immediate treatment of soft tissue injuries, it is equally as important in later rehabilitation.

After the first 48 hours when bleeding should have stopped the aim of treatment changes from restricting bleeding and swelling to getting the tissues re-mobilised with exercise and stretching. Ice helps in the rehabilitation phase by reducing pain and muscle spasm and allowing better movement. Ice can be used during exercises or immediately before, so the area is still numb.

In Sports Clubs, ice flakers are the ice machine of choice for Trainers and Physiotherapists alike. Producing ice for a wide range of injuries - tendon, ligament and muscular - flake ice has the advantage of being easily moulded to the contours of the body part, whether it's a finger, a knee, leg or a back and so is perfect for use in ice packs.

Scotsman ice flakers are used by most of the UK’s leading football clubs including Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea FC.

As well as injury treatment, ice has another use to aid the quick recovery of sportspeople and athletes after a competition or gruelling training session -the Ice Bath.

With advocates including Johnny Wilkinson and Paula Radcliffe (who supposedly has a 10-minute ice bath after every race), numerous athletes find that Ice Baths are the most effective way to speed recovery of their muscles.

When you get into an ice bath for 5 to 10 minutes, the icy cold water causes your blood vessels to tighten and drains the blood out of your legs. So when you get out of the bath, your legs fill up with 'new' blood that invigorates your muscles with oxygen to help the cells function better.

Chris Davis, Commercial Director of Hubbard Ice Systems says: "There really is an ice solution to meet every budget and Hubbard Ice Systems can provide ice flakers that are compact, automatic and need little maintenance, delivering pure flake ice as and when you need it and ensuring the perfect treatment, time after time. But then there's perhaps the most important use of ice - in the Bar! Scotsman ice cubers are the worldwide market leaders and available in a wide range of choices, producing large, medium or small cubes in five different cube shapes".

In a variety of output sizes to suit all needs, producing from 10 Kg to 2.5 Tonnes per 24-hour period, Scotsman ice maker options range from hygienic self-service water and ice dispensers to traditional under counter cube making and storage.

So to improve the performance of your sportspeople and your club just add ice to the mix.

To take advantage of significant savings of up to 30% off list prices during May and June, which includes 2-year parts, labour warranty and mainland UK delivery, Hubbard Ice Systems can be contacted on 01473 890129. Leasing service available.
