Hubbard Ice Fuels 'Food & Fuel' With a Scotsman

25/02/2008

A Scotsman ACM 106, small footprint but high capacity, Supercube ice-making machine from Hubbard Ice Systems is proving popular in one of the new Food & Fuel pub chain's busy bars.

Mel's in Garrett Lane, Wandsworth is part of the Food & Fuel group of London gastropubs and café bars launched recently by well-known pub business lady Karen Jones, formerly of The Spirit Group. Karen is running the chain in conjunction with former Spirit colleagues Jo Cumming and Peter Myers and her Cafe Rouge co-founder Roger Myers.

Food & Fuel has ten pubs in its portfolio, five of which are leasehold former Spirit Group pubs and five have been purchased from Front Page Pubs.

With a small footprint, a daily ice production of 50kg or 2500 cubes and a bin storage capacity of 23kg the Scotsman ACM 106 is the perfect solution for a busy bar requiring ice on demand.

The ACM106 is part of the new Scotsman 6-Series of ice-making machines designed to reduce ice-making costs with more storage for less outlay. The ACM 106 certainly does this, with 28% more capacity than its predecessor in the Scotsman range.

Mel's, formerly called the Open Page, has only been open a few weeks but Landlady Mel Warsama, after whom the pub was named, says business is booming. "In such a busy bar it's important to have machinery that I can rely on, which is one of the reasons we went for the Scotsman”, explains Mel.

Hubbard Ice Systems and Scotsman are 'ice experts' in meeting the needs of the hospitality trade. Indeed Scotsman Supercube cubes are the most popular type of ice cubes in use in the UK and are the perfect choice for restaurants, pubs, clubs and bars. Made in the famous Scotsman thimble shape, their clarity makes them the perfect choice for drinks presentation whilst their purity ensures that they are slow to melt. Their unique shape means that these cubes are less prone to sticking together in the ice bucket as well as being easier to handle than the more traditional square cube.

Mel appreciates the fact that the Scotsman ACM 106 is compact and so the perfect under-counter solution as well as offering stylish good looks. She says, “Food & Fuel pubs are modern, stylish and design conscious and it's important the machine doesn't look out of place, especially as it is situated where it can be seen by customers. And because it fits perfectly under the bar we can use ice straight from the machine and don't need to collect it from a back room and use ice buckets, saving valuable time"

Mel finds the Scale-guard feature of the Scotsman machine particularly useful. If not removed, scale can cause damage to the machine and prevent it performing to its optimum level, reducing output and energy efficiency. Scale-guard prevents the build up of scale by using an ingenious flushing system, which deposits the scale in a cap from which it can be easily removed. Mel says, “because of this inbuilt system limescale is one less thing I need to worry about!"

Another feature of the Scotsman 6-Series machines is the antibacterial pouch, which helps prevent bacteria build up along with its side effect of bad odour.

Scotsman ice-making machines are also remarkably energy efficient. The day-to-day running costs of the machines offer the potential for significant savings with the benefit of a notably lower carbon footprint.

All Scotsman machines supplied by Hubbard Ice Systems are fully compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Lead Free directive as well as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations and Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS).

Mel Warsama has vast experience of the pub industry and has worked her way up to become landlady at Mel's. She adds, "Ive worked in the industry for seven years but have not come across a machine as good looking and well-thought-out as this before. Right down to the details - the elegant lines of the machine, even the clever ice scoop holder."
