Scotsman of the Antarctic

21/08/2007

A Scotsman Ice machine is on it's way to the Antarctic! Hubbard Ice Systems have supplied an ACM45 'SuperCube' icemaker for installation aboard the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) research vessel RRS James Clark Ross.

The ACM45 is a compact icemaker ideal for use in restricted spaces such as back bar situations or aboard a ship, and is being used to provide Ice for drinks and refreshment while the 7,000 tonne vessel is at sea.

Ken Olly, Catering Officer on board the James Clark Ross, is responsible for feeding and refreshing the ship's complement of 11 officers and 15 crew, together with up to 50 scientists who can be in passage to the three permanent British Antarctic research bases.

"The ship can be in the Antarctic for eight months at a time", says Ken Olly. "Even when it's cold outside, an ice-cold drink can be welcome after a long working stretch inside in the warm".

The BAS is responsible for almost all of the Governments scientific research in the Antarctic, and is playing a key role in the growing understanding of the environment and phenomena such as global warming. The RSS James Clark Ross is one of the world's most comprehensively equipped marine research vessels. Launched in 1990, it is also one of the world's toughest ships, capable of safe passage through heavy pack ice and built to survive the worst weather conditions.

The ACM45 icemaker is designed to be just as tough and reliable. It produces the familiar thimble-shaped 'SuperCube', clear and slow-melting in drinks, chilling effectively and enhancing their appearance. Designed for bars, hotels and restaurants that need fast production of ice in confined spaces, the ACM45 was selected as ideal for shipboard use, plumbing in easily to the ship's fresh water supply, and producing up to 23kg every day, with a 14kg holding bin.

Standard features of the ACM45 include rust-resistant 304 grade stainless steel construction, electronic controls for extra reliability, and a self-flushing automatic drain valve which operates once every icemaking cycle to improve hygiene and minimise scale build-up.

In common with all Hubbard's Scotsman Icemakers, the ACM45 matches or exceeds all important design, safety and health standards.
