Sahara - the seal with wanderlust – snuggles up for another summer on ice in Cornwall
Sahara the world’s best known - and the UK’s only - captive arctic hooded seal is hitting the headlines again. The 2-year-old, timid male who was originally rescued in 2006 after being washed up near Morocco, thousands of miles from his Arctic home is set to become the National Seal Sanctuaries most popular guest.
After he featured on News programmes all over the world in 2008 highlighting his plight, visitors from around the globe have made trips to the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek in Cornwall especially to see him. So much so that the Sanctuary has appealed to Hubbard Ice Systems to extend indefinitely the loan of the UK’s only Scotsman MFN56 Bulk Nugget Ice machine which was provided to see Sahara through his recuperation until he was fit to be released again.

Hubbard Ice at Brunel for Future Olympians

The world-class UK Athletics (UKA) Centre at Brunel University has purchased a Scotsman MV300 ice maker from Hubbard Ice Systems to provide their star athletes with post-training ice baths, which aid quick recovery by increasing blood flow to the muscles.
Brunel University Athletics Centre is one of four UKA High Performance Centres (HiPACs). It has been included in the official London 2012 Pre-Games Preparation Camp Guide and a number of former Brunel athletes recently competed in the Beijing Olympics. It is therefore imperative that the athletes and possible stars of the future who train at Brunel get the best treatment and are provided with high quality equipment.

Ice for the Arctic Seal with Wanderlust

Hubbard Ice Systems has loaned a Scotsman ice machine to the National Seal Sanctuary in Cornwall, to help resident Arctic Hooded Seal, Sahara, feel more at home over the warm summer months.
Sahara the Arctic Hooded Seal has been given a permanent home by the National Seal Sanctuary after swimming more than 1000 miles to Mediterranean waters and being rescued not once but twice.
The 2-year-old, timid male was originally found in 2006 washed up near Morocco, thousands of miles from his Arctic home. He was malnourished and had a lung infection but was quickly transferred to Loro Parque Zoo in Tenerife to be rehabilitated. Once he was well enough Sahara was flown to the National Seal Sanctuary in Cornwall but he was still bald, 40kilos overweight and had an under-active thyroid. The Seal Sanctuary nurtured Sahara back to full strength, fitted him with a satellite tag and released him back into the wild off the Orkney Coast but within 8 weeks he washed up again, this time off the coast of Spain.

Hubbard Ice Filters Out Danger - Cryptosporidium Outbreak Triggers Alarm

More than 250,000 people in the Daventry and Northampton area have been told to boil their water for drinking and food use during an outbreak of the parasite Cryptosporidium, which began on 25 June 2008.
However, Hubbard Ice Systems wishes to let their customers in the area know that Scotsman ice-making machines fitted with a water filter can safely run from a mains water supply as Hubbard filters remove bacteria and parasites - including the infectious Cryptosporidium.
People can be infected with the parasite by consuming contaminated water or food, or by swimming in contaminated water. If swallowed Cryptosporidium can cause gastroenteritis, with symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting and fever. It is especially harmful to young children and those with weak immune systems and can cause fatalities. The parasite can also be spread through animal-to-human or human-to-human contact.
Hubbard Ice always recommends that their customers choose an optional Hubbard filter with their Scotsman machine, not only to prevent the spread of harmful particles but also to produce premium quality, pure ice and to demonstrate that they are exercising due diligence in avoiding infections.
